Stargate Atlantis Rewatch: Season 1, disc 4 Special Features

Special Features
Mission Directive: Sanctuary
Director Andy Mikita talks about the making of the episode Sanctuary, including tidbits about the location and interior sets and how the episode was shot.
Mission Directive: Before I Sleep
The making of one of my favorite episodes of the series with Director Andy Mikita. Torri Higginson spent hours in makeup to look so convincingly old. It was interesting to get a glimpse of how it was done.
Audio Commentary for Hot Zone
Writer Martin Gero, actors Rachel Luttrell, Rainbow Sun Franks and Paul McGillion. In which the concept of the bottle episode is explained: You use just a few sets and not much by way of special effects. This is mostly done to save money. Rachel Luttrell talks about how she had no martial arts experience prior to joining the show and how much training it took for her to make it look like Tayla could kick your ass. They also make an interesting point about Sheppard not having his radio in the workout room when he needed it: It goes to what his superiors hate about how willing he is to disregard protocol, so it fits with the character. Conversely, Tayla–having previously been shown to be a very responsible person–has her radio. PS: Everybody loves David Hewlett’s ability to spew pages and pages of dialog and ad lib and be brilliant.
Audio Commentary for Sanctuary
Actors Rachel Luttrell and Torri Higginson. Bit more nonsense comments from these two than what we usually get in these commentaries, but they do talk about the other actors. Ooh, gossip. They do provide some interesting trivia about various scenes. For instance, a set that looks like it’s outdoors was actually shot in the same studio that they shoot the puddle jumper scenes in. We also learn that they try to use the same extras for the city walk-throughs so it gives a sense of continuity.
Audio Commentary for The Brotherhood
Director Martin Wood, writer Martin Gero and actor David Hewlett. Funny bit: on the packaging, they misspelled David’s name as “David Hewitt”. Woops. It’s a little frustrating to learn that there were running gags that the production had to cut from episodes due to time. In this case, it was Pick On Ford, which started in Hot Zone. As we usually do when we get a director and writer on these commentaries we get a lot of behind the scenes making-of type of trivia, which is so much fun.
Trailer for MirrorMask
This trailer sent me scurrying to add this movie to my Netflix queue as soon as they said “Neil Gaiman” and “Dave McKean” in the same breath. Seriously, with me that’s about all it takes.
Production Design and Photo Gallery
Woo, pretty pictures.
